泥水平衡巖石頂管機應用于市政管道（污水管、供水管、供電電纜管、通信電纜管、天然氣管等）的建設，管材通常為砼管、鋼管，可以適應在含有卵石、礫石、巖石等復雜地質條件下施工，適用直線或曲線頂進距離100m-1000m。采用泥水平衡方式完成巖石破碎、推進、連續排渣等作業，完成管道安全、高效、高質量非開挖鋪設，可以較好地控制地面沉降。
